ICESTAR: A link between IHY and IPY
|IHY will run partly in parallel with the fourth International Polar Year (IPY) programme which will cover the time period from March 2007 to March 2009. IPY will address a wide range of different research areas both in social and natural sciences and grouped under six main themes. ICESTAR (Interhemispheric Conjugacy Effects in Solar-Terrestrial and Aeronomy Research) is a programme coordinating multinational research on Sun-Earth connections. ICESTAR is supported by SCAR (Scientific Committee on Antarctic Researc) and concentrates on studies of magnetospheric and upper atmospheric responses to solar activity with emphases on the networking of the ground-based instrumentation and the study of interhemispheric relationships. ICESTAR and IHY together serve as an umbrella for 27 other international consortia to form the initiative "Heliosphere impact on geospace" which IPY has endorsed as one of its core projects (IPY ID 63). Finnish Meteorological Institute and Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (UK) will lead this project.
