The summer school 2010 is a joint course together with the University of Würzburg graduate school in Theoretical Astrophysics and Particle Physics. The school will take place in Mariehamn in Åland (Finland) on 16-20 August, 2010.

Details about times and places:

  • Gathering to get started on 16 Aug at 9am in Alandica (Strandgatan 33), room 301
  • Hotels, Alandica and boat terminal on the map
  • Åland taxi numbers: +358 18 26000 or +358 18 32000 (reservations in advance is recommended)
  • Excursion on Sat 21 Aug is from about 9:30 to 12:30. It includes a guided tour to Kastelholma and Bomarsund, and a lunch. The bus leaves from Hotel Pommern and delivers you back in the same spot. List of participants will be collected during the first few course days.
  • Please, bring a name tag with you.. any one with your name on it will do.

  • Hannu Koskinen (Finnish Meteorological Institute, FMI): Plasma theory
  • Pekka Janhunen (FMI) & Felix Spanier (University of Würzburg): Magnetohydrodynamic simulations
  • Anatoly Spitkovsky (Princeton University): Particle-in-cell method
  • Esa Kallio (FMI): Hybrid simulations
  • Rami Vainio (University of Helsinki): Particle transport and acceleration

    In addition to the lectures, the course will include a project work in groups. Thus, programming skills and laptop computers (for most participants) are required.
