Interhemispheric variations of ozone loss due to solar storms
|
ObjectiveSolar proton injections have been shown to destroy ozone in the middle atmosphere. Here, the intention is to understand how the atmospheric ozone loss due to solar storms depends on the illumination conditions.Exercise outlineDetermine the periods of solar particle injections from the geostationary measurements of proton flux. Use ENVISAT/GOMOS measurements for winter hemispheric ozone data, while ODIN/OSIRIS data are used for the summer hemisphere ozone data. Determine the ozone loss by comparing to the amount of ozone before the solar particle injection occurred. What is the difference in the magnitude of the ozone loss between the two hemispheres? Is there a difference in the duration of the ozone loss between the hemispheres? What about the height profile differences?Data
