Effect of storm sudden commencement (SSC) to the dayside magnetosphere
(Petri Toivanen)

Objective

To understand the effect of a sudden increase of solar wind dynamic pressure (such as those often preceeding magnetic storms) to the dayside magnetosphere. How does the compression affect the magnetic field morphology?

Exercise outline

Identify storm sudden commencement periods. Study the magnetic compression from recordings of the satellites traversing the dayside magnetosphere. How does the pulse height affect the compression magnitude? What are the relative contributions of the solar wind velocity and density to the compression?
