Is the sunspot number a good indicator for magnetic activity?
(Ari Viljanen)

Objective

To understand how the sunspot number is related to magnetic activity.

Exercise outline

Present the distributions of the sunspot number, Dst, AE, F10.7, solar wind density, and velocity. Determine correlations between the sunspot number and the other parameters. Find also periodicities from each parameter/index either by plotting or computing a Fourier power spectrum. Is the sunspot number a good indicator of magnetic activity? Examine also how well the time derivative of the sunspot number is related to magnetic activity.
