The 11th EARSeL Workshop on Land Ice and Snow 2026 was held in Kumpula, in Helsinki, Finland, in the premises of the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) on 9 -11 February, 2026. This year the keynote speakers were
- Prof. Dr. Stefan Wunderle, Head of Remote Sensing Research Group at the University of Bern, Switzerland
- Prof. Dr. Jouni Pulliainen, Director of Space and Observation Centre at the Finnish Meteorological Institute, Finland
- Prof. Dr. Ing. Claudio Persello, Adjunct Professor at the University of Twente, Faculty of Geoinformation Science and Earth Observation (ITC), The Netherlands
- Dr. Chris Derksen, Acting Director, Climate Research Division, Environment and Climate Change Canada, Canada
The presentation of Dr. Derksen from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) focused on the status of the planned Terrestrial Snow Mass Mission (TSSM). This Canadian Ku-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite mission would provide a major impact on the monitoring of global snow and regional snow cover providing a vital freshwater resource over a large fraction of the Northern Hemisphere. This includes both research and operational applications e.g., in hydrological forecasting.
