Radar Target Classification
New methodology for automatic classifying of polarimetric radar data into various meteorological and non-meteorological target classes facilitates weather prediction but also enables completely new applications with immediate benefits to the society. E.g., realtime monitoring of bird migration allows accurate prediction of impact hazards for air traffic and thus enhances operational safety and reduces repair costs, estimated to be currently over one billion euros per year on the global scale. Bird migration is of specific interest in the wind energy sector as well, and insect distribution is relevant to agriculture.
