ImpactoChile Hackathon winners will come to visit FMI

On the weekend 3.-5. September 15 teams competed in an intense Hackathon to use EU Copernicus data to improve Chilean air quality, agriculture or mining industry. The winning team is FungusFree that especially broadly envisioned the use of Copernicus data to predict, observe and treat a specific fungus threatening agriculture in Chile. Being able to leverage both seasonal forecasts and Sentinel-2 data for a service to use a biological treatment early enough for a sustainable agriculture convinced the jury in a tight competition. The winner team will enjoy a 5.000 € travel budget to visit the Finnish Meteorological Institute. Two runner-up teams Stars in the city and NeuralSun have 2.500 € each to send one representative per team to the same trip as well.

Stars in the city is using live video cams on the internet to timely track air quality in Santiago, while NeuralSun is changing the energy markets in favor of sustainable sources. A really big thanks to all the participating teams and especially to Ultrahack, the mentors and jury. All the teams are invited to develop further their ideas and the Earth Observation team at FMI is funded by the EU Framework Program for Copernicus Uptake to help! With the winners on their team this will be very concrete and intense, but for the other teams the online hackathon should have shown how well online interaction can be. Let’s continue hacking!!!
