ESA and FMI established in 2025 the “ESA-FMI Arctic-Boreal Earth Science, Calibration and Validation Supersite”. The development work started with a three-year project that upgrades the site with new satellite reference instruments and data analysis systems. The development provides a unique basis for the validation of the data and products of current and future ESA and EU Copernicus satellite missions.

The launch event on 21-22 April 2026 was organized together with the SpacEconomy project review meeting – a project funded by the national Strategic Research Council. The goal of the event was to set up an ecosystem to utilize the globally unique FMI EO infrastructure in Sodankylä, Finnish Lapland. The event was participated by a large group of Finnish space industry companies and other stakeholders.

The ongoing activity is carried out in co-operation with the Finnish space industry, also to establish a testbed for industrial R&D – not only in the Finnish but also in the European context. The Finnish companies participating the ESA-project initializing the new development include CGI Finland, Harp Technologies, Huld, Kelluu, KuvaSpace and Vaisala.
