Urban air pollution poses a significant threat to human health and the quality of life of millions of people worldwide. Nine out of ten people are estimated to live in areas where the air contains high levels of pollutants, causing around 7 million deaths every year. More than 90% of air pollution-related deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, mainly in Asia and Africa, but also in the Eastern Mediterranean region, central Europe and the Americas. Many of these areas have no air-quality monitoring networks and rely mainly on satellite data.
AtmosHack collects together the developers, scientists and designers from several countries to create solutions that help people in their daily lives to recognize and avoid air pollutants and understand the key factors. The data from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS), EUMETSAT, INAR and AC SAF is used in this hackathon. The event is funded by CAMS, sponsored by Vaisala and AC SAF and organized by CAMS, EUMETSAT, FMI and INAR together with Ultrahack.
