Sodankylä Research Infrastructure Principal Investigator Anna Kontu

Dr. Anna Kontu has been appointed as Sodankylä Research Infrastructure Principal Investigator in 2018. She is the point of contact and person in charge of the scientific measurement campaign activities as well as all of the research equipment and infrastructure at the FMI Arctic Space Centre (FMI-ARC) in Sodankylä.

Dr. Kontu has been working with microwave measurements and various snow studies since 2006 in Sodankylä. Her research focuses on how well snow and ice covered water bodies can be modelled using satellites operating in microwave frequencies.  She has developed improved methods for more accurate snow water equivalent (SWE) mapping.

Anna Kontu received her doctoral degree from Aalto University, Department of Electronics and Nanoengineering, in May 2018. Her doctoral thesis “Effect of snow microstructure and subnivean water bodies on microwave radiometry of seasonal snow” can be downloaded from: https://aaltodoc.aalto.fi/handle/123456789/53
