Leena Leppänen from Space and Earth Observation Centre (FMI-SPACE) discussed in the 8th November evening news show of YLE (Finland’s national public broadcasting company) about the manual snow survey program in the Arctic Research Centre of Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI-ARC). The snow survey consists of numerous observations of natural seasonal taiga snowpack in Sodankylä, northern Finland. Measurement areas cover the most typical forest and soil types of the boreal forest zone. Systematic snow measurements began in 1909 with snow depth (SD) and snow water equivalent (SWE), although there exists some even older records of snow and ice cover.
