Director of Earth Observation Programmes and Head of ESA-ESRIN (D/EOP), Simonetta Cheli, visited Sodankylä Arctic Space Centre (FMI-ARC) together with Toni Tolker-Nielsen, Head of the Earth Observation Projects Department. The visit on the 14-15th of March 2023 was hosted by Jussi Kaurola, Director General of Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) and FMI-SPACE staff.

A key topic of the visit was the discussion on the use of Sodankylä research infrastructure to support the deployment of European Union’s Copernicus Sentinel Expansion missions, in particular Copernicus Anthropogenic Carbon Dioxide Monitoring (CO2M), Copernicus Imaging Microwave Radiometer (CIMR) and Copernicus Hyperspectral Imaging Mission for the Environment (CHIME). Of these missions the launch of two CO2M satellites is already confirmed to provide observations of anthropogenic carbon emissions, and assessments of carbon sinks and sources.
